Our Journey to a Healthy Lifestyle

It all started one night in January 2016 when my husband showed me an interview of Russell Simmons at the 105.1 radio station. Up to that moment, my husband and I were struggling with real weight issues and I was having a hard time with:

  1. Focusing on what I wanted to do
  2. Skin issues
  3. Lack of energy or motivation to work out or be active in any way
  4. A lazy attitude (watched a lot of TV because it was the only thing that felt good at that time)
  5. Addiction to Sugar
  6. Bad eating habits
  7. Change of moods
  8. Lack of good sleep                                                                                                                                     *If you answered yes to any of the points above, keep reading and take action after!*

For months I had been thinking that something had to change but I had no idea where to start, what to do or how to really make a true commitment to my wellness. So I watched the Russell Simmons interview and I almost felt like he was talking to me. Everything he said resonated with me, from how the food made us feel to how exercise impacted our body and mind. I was intrigued by the interview. Finally something just clicked.

I started reading the “Happy Vegan” book (which is amazing) but I started asking myself many questions about the food I was eating. For the next 2 weeks, I spent countless amount of hours watching documentaries, youtube videos, reading articles on Facebook and reading books on my kindle about a FRUIT & PLANT BASED DIET. I became somewhat obsessed (ask my husband LOL). It felt like I finally solved a puzzle or solved a big mystery.

Now I understood why I was feeling the way I was. You see, I blamed everything and everyone for my unhealthy lifestyle. If I didn’t blame my husband, I would blame my IUD, lack of time, lack of money, or being “TOO BUSY” because I was a mom. I made so many excuses for my poor eating habits but the real answer was that I wasn’t aware what a healthy lifestyle consisted of or what REAL FOOD even was. I finally took the time to really educate myself on health and the results of our eating habits on our body and minds. Folks, ignorance is NOT bliss. When you don’t know better, you don’t do better. For once, I felt like I was on the right path to a healthy lifestyle.

You see, all my life I always thought that I was eating healthy. I followed the food chains that they thought us in school and the ones our parents followed. I never really questioned it because why should we question our schools and parents when they know what’s best for us? I was wrong. They think they know what’s best for us just like I thought I knew what was best for my son when it came to nutrition. We just didn’t know better and we didn’t educate ourselves to do better. Since my son was born, my only mission as a Mom was to feed him healthy foods so he can grow up to be a very active and healthy boy. I did all the right things when he was a baby. I never fed him canned or jar food and he ate lots of fruit and vegetable purees I made myself with the baby bullet. I never really bought any junk (well I thought it wasn’t junk at that time) and I made healthy meals for him that consisted mostly of meat, rice and salad. His snacks were mostly granola bars and fruit cups. Little did I know that the “healthy” food I was giving him was actually sugar addicting foods with very little nutrition for him. And let’s not even get into what I was doing to be “healthy”. I was always following these intense diets to lose weight which resulted in a weight war for years (another post will talk more about my diets in more detail).

What did we do with all this new information on REAL Foods? We took massive action. I took charge of my family’s health from that day on, one day at a time. I removed all the junk from our household (including store bought juices), we stopped eating meat & poultry, we became vegetable and fruit juicers, we removed all processed foods and white breads from our diets, and I began to feed my family LOTS of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Not only that, we started to watch what we put on our bodies and what skin/cleaning products we were using. Turned out everything we used was VERY toxic for us. A green lifestyle was also on the horizon for us.

In a short period of time I saw such a huge difference in my family. We become more active and focused, our moods changed, and we were enjoying the healthy foods we were eating. My husband and I are losing weight and my son is super fit from all the healthy foods and juices we consume daily. My relationship with food is no longer negative. And I look forward to cooking now (I was one of those moms that hated cooking and was too busy to come home early to cook for her family). Life looks so different now.

I AM a committed mommy to her family’s health and wellness. What a great feeling moms! If you’re going through some of these issues in your family, get inspired and motivated to make a change. And when you do decide to make that change, NEVER LOOK BACK. It will be the best decision you have ever made. I promise you!
